They're, Their or There
ESL Lesson on Homonyms
Lesoverzicht
Deze les is ontworpen voor studenten die Engels als 2de taal aanleren (ESL : English as a Second Language), maar de inhoud (bijvoorbeeld, het verhaal) zou aangepast kunnen worden voor andere studenten.
Leerdoel :
Deze les laat studenten het gebruik inoefenen van de hymoniemen they're, their en there.
Opbouw van de les :
Studenten beluisteren eerst een verhaal via een een audio-clip. Terwijl ze dit doen, lezen ze dat zelfde verhaal. Zo ontdekken ze welke schrijfwijze wanneer gebruikt wordt.
Daarna lezen ze verklaringen van de verschillende termen.
Vervolgens maken ze hierop verschillende oefeningen.

Two brothers, Jim and John, wanted to make some extra money. They had some ideas but decided to ask their parents for more ideas. Their mother said to their father, "They're good singers. Over there across the street is a restaurant. They could sing for their supper."
So the boys went to this restaurant and got a job singing on Saturday night. The customers liked their songs and soon there were large crowds. "They're young but they sing from the heart," people said. Eventually, their boss gave them a raise.
The boys shared their money with their family. Their proud parents said to each other, "They're great!"

Verklaring
They're– samenvoegeing van "they" en "are."
Tip: Probeer "they are" te vervangen. Als de zin nog klopt, weet je wat te gebruiken!
Voorbeelden:
- They're coming over for lunch today, and I'd better get ready.
- Afterwards, they'e hoping to go on tour.
- They're the people who live on the corner.
Their– het bezittelijk voornaamwoord van "they" (3de persoon meervoud). Iets behoort hen toe (Something belongs to them). Dat iets is van 'hun' ding (It's their thing).
Begrijp je dit? The thing that is owned follows the "their."
Hint: In het woor "their" zit het woord "heir." Een "heir" is een erfgenaam, iemand die iets bezit nadat iemand overleden is. Zo kan je onthouden dat "their" over "bezitten" gaat.
Voorbeelden:
- Their car was pulling into the driveway.
- For lunch at the deli, I tried their ham sandwich.
- Their hopes were dashed when the accident happened.
There– location, pointing out something, something exists.
Tip: In het woord "there" zit het woord "here" (hier). Dat kan je helpen om te weten dat "there" gaat over 'plaats'. Als je in een zin "here" kan gebruiken, zal "there" ook lukken.
Voorbeelden:
- Over there is a house with red shutters.
- There is a tavern in the town.
- I'm going there to see if I can help.
